Plans to ensure the future of high quality accommodation for older people in York took another step forward this week with the launch of a procurement exercise for a new care home on the former Burnholme School site.Government Opportunities

The advertisement – in the official journal of the European Union – seeks a partner to fund, build and operate a nursing and residential care home on the site of the Burnholme Health & Wellbeing campus.

Bidders will be asked to submit proposals over the next ten weeks, which will then be evaluated and presented to the Executive on 8 December.

The specification includes:

  • A care home to provide residential and nursing care, including care for people with dementia.
  • Agreement for City of York Council to ‘block purchase’ up to 30 beds in the home, at a discount.
  • An agreement for the council to receive a capital receipt for the land.

Other plans for the Health and Wellbeing Campus include the continued sports use, a health centre and new family homes as part of the overall re-development of the site, plus:

  • Development of an Explore library learning centre and cafe.
  • Restoration of the existing main hall.
  • Music rooms and recording studios.
  • A learning kitchen for use by community groups.
  • Community space and meeting rooms.
  • New Nursery facilities

Under the proposals, work will be carried out to refurbish part of the old school buildings to bring them up to current building, energy and health and safety regulations, safeguarding their use for the future. This will be complemented by new-build elements, improving the functionality of the spaces.

Councillor Carol Runciman, Executive Member for Adult Social Care and Health, said:

“I am pleased that this important project is taking another step forward. The plans for Burnholme offer a unique opportunity to deliver a range of new facilities in this part of York, and I look forward to seeing them progress further.”
