Grangetown Community Hub unveiled by Minister

A new state-of-the-art community hub in Cardiff will provide free internet access, a new library, and housing, benefit and employment advice, all under one roof.Government Opportunities

This was the message from Communities and Tackling Poverty Minister, Lesley Griffiths, as she officially opened Grangetown Community Hub today.

The Hub forms part of a wider regeneration programme in Grangetown, supported by almost £1m of Welsh Government funding, which includes improvements to local businesses and enhancements to the Clare Road/Penarth Road junction.

The Minister’s visit marks the launch of the Welsh Government’s refreshed Digital Inclusion Strategic Framework, which sets out how modern facilities like the Grangetown Hub can help people to get online.

The Framework outlines the Welsh Government’s aim that everyone who wants to make full use of the opportunities offered by the internet, is able to do so by 2020. It also commits to support those who are most likely to be digital excluded, such as older people, tenants in social housing, unemployed people and disabled people.

Latest statistics show digital exclusion has fallen from 34% in 2010 to 19% in 2015. This progress is being supported by the Welsh Government’s £2m investment in Digital Communities Wales, which has already helped support an estimated 16,000 people to get online and do more online.

Communities and Tackling Poverty Minister, Lesley Griffiths, said:

“I am delighted to officially open the Grangetown Community Hub, which will provide a wide range of services all under one roof. The Hub is just one element of a wide-ranging regeneration programme which is revitalising the very heart of the community.

“Modern facilities like these are key to achieving our vision of a Wales where nobody is digitally excluded. Being online can have a hugely positive impact on people’s lives, helping them get jobs, save money and stay in touch with friends and family. This is why our new Digital Inclusion Strategic Framework sets out our ambition to build on the good work we have already achieved so by 2020, everyone who wants to be online, is benefitting fully from the digital world.”
