Groundbreaking council deal guarantees local contracts for Croydon people

Croydon tradespeople are being urged to attend a recruitment event next week that promises new business opportunities for local firms and individuals to work on upgrading the borough’s 14,000 council homes.Government Opportunities

Croydon Council is hosting a Meet the Buyer event at its Bernard Weatherill House offices alongside its main housing repairs supplier Mulalley on Monday 27 June to sign up new sub-contractors to work on its £12 million planned repairs contract.

Under a council requirement written into the deal with Mulalley, at least 84 local tradespeople based in the borough must benefit – either as individual sub-contractors or as a firm’s employees.

The deal, set up under the council’s Value Croydon initiative and the first of its kind in the borough, could also hand extra work to another 100 local tradespeople if the council extends Mulalley’s contract from 2023.

Mulalley wants to go even further and give Croydon businesses 95% of its supply chain within five years, covering repairs and upgrades to council properties’ kitchens, bathrooms, roofs and extensions.

The council plans to further guarantee local jobs in future contracts when they come up for renewal, including its facilities management contract that looks after maintaining council offices.

The Meet The Buyer event is from 5pm-7pm on 27 June at Croydon Council’s Conference Suite, CO1 & CO2,  Ground Floor, Bernard Weatherill House, 8 Mint Walk, Croydon CR0 1EA. To register your interest or for further information, email: public.relations@mulalley.co.uk

The event is open to:

Councillor Simon Hall, cabinet member for finance and treasury said:

“Employment for local people is key to our borough’s regeneration – that’s why this council is making sure that tradespeople from across the borough get more opportunities through our own contracts.”
