Western Bypass works are key to Northern Powerhouse

Work to widen the A1 Western Bypass was hailed as key to creating the Northern Powerhouse.Government Opportunities (GO)

Newcastle leader Cllr Nick Forbes met transport chiefs including transport Minister Andrew Jones MP at the launch of The Northern Transport Strategy Spring 2016 report.

It marked a year since a blueprint for building the Northern Powerhouse by transforming transport was announced by Transport for the North and the government.

The report sets out plans for transformative projects such as Northern Powerhouse Rail and Smart North – a system to help passengers switch easily between buses, trains and trams across the region while ensuring value for money.

And it updates some of the key improvements made already, with billions of pounds already guaranteed across rail, road and smart ticketing to deliver better journeys for passengers and support economic growth across the region.

Newcastle Leader Cllr Nick Forbes said:

“We’re here today as part of the launch of the Transport for the North strategy, which is about building on the successes of the work to improve the Western Bypass and to improve transport connectivity between the North East and other places in the North, like Leeds and Manchester.

This is going to take a huge amount of investment over a long period of time but working together we can show that we have a plan for the North to grow.

It is a pleasure to welcome the transport minister here today as part of a longer term commitment to make sure the North is firmly on the map.”
