Three sports facilities in North Wales will be upgraded following a successful application for the £5m Welsh Government Sport Facilities Capital Loan Scheme.Government Opportunities

Eirias Parc in Conwy, the Waterworld Leisure Activity Centre and the Chirk Leisure Activity Centre, Wrexham will benefit from almost £2million interest free loan to update and modernise their facilities – including refurbishment of current amenities and new facilities, such as a 3G football/rugby pitch.

The Welsh Government’s Sports Facilities Capital Loan Scheme was introduced on a pilot basis to provide local authorities with the opportunity to apply for an interest free loan to make them more inclusive, attractive and accessible and ensuring they meet the needs of the local area.

Eirias Parc in Conwy will benefit from a loan of almost £1m to update its facilities, including a new 3G football/rugby pitch, an artificial bowling green, a hydrotherapy pool, multi-purpose activity room and dedicated ATP hockey surface.

The Wales Collaborative Sports Facilities Group will also be providing £300,000 in funding. With almost £900,000 from Conwy County Council, the total investment in the project will be £2.19m.

In Wrexham, a loan of £1m will help facilitate the significant refurbishment of Waterworld Leisure and Activity Centre and improvements to Chirk Leisure and Activity Centre to attract greater usage and improve customer experience.

Announcing the loans, the Deputy Minister for Culture, Sport and Tourism, Ken Skates, said:

“We launched our Sports Facilities Capital Loan Scheme to help local authorities find new and exciting ways of developing facilities to encourage whole families to enjoy and take part in sporting activities in their area.

“We recognise that this is a challenging financial time for authorities and I am pleased we are supporting them to create the right facilities in the right places, breaking down barriers to sport so that people of all abilities, ages and backgrounds can enjoy its many benefits.”
