Minister approves £20m for new school in Cardiff

Education Minister, Huw Lewis has approved over £20m for a brand new school in the east of Cardiff as part of the Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools programme.Government Opportunities

The new school building is one of a number of projects being progressed under Cardiff Council’s overall 21st Century Schools Plan. It will be located in the Trowbridge area of the City, will provide local learners with a brand new, English medium, community school and will also host on site, post-16 provision delivered by Cardiff and Vale College.

Welsh Government and Cardiff Council will jointly fund over  £40m for the new school which will replace the existing Eastern High building in Rumney. It will provide in excess of 1200 places for pre-16 learners and up to 500 places for learners over 16.

Education Minister, Huw Lewis said:

“I am very pleased to approve substantial Welsh Government funding support  for a brand new school building for Eastern High that will be enjoyed by local pupils and residents for generations to come.

This innovative project includes on site post-16 provision delivered by a local college. I am optimistic that this investment, alongside the support that Eastern High is receiving through our Schools Challenge Cymru programme,  will help to encourage young people and members of the local community to continue with their education after compulsory school age.

Through our 21st Century Schools and Education Programme, and in partnership with local authorities right across Wales, we are continuing to build some fantastic and iconic schools and colleges.

Indeed by 2019, 150 schools and colleges are due to be transformed through the programme, delivering state of the art facilities in surroundings that inspire and encourage our learners to fulfil their potential.  It really is a significant investment and nothing less than our young people deserve.”
