Big step forward for planned Newport urban village

Plans by the Tirion Group to turn a huge former steelworks site at Newport into a flagship 500-home urban village have taken a big step forward with the start of work on a multi-million pound contract to clear and clean the land in preparation for construction.Government Opportunities

It is expected that the project at Whiteheads will generate a total of up to 1,500 jobs and inject around £140m into the local economy.

Following the signing of contracts with Tirion’s development company, civil engineering firm Walters has moved onto the 39-acre site close to the city centre to remove the legacy of 80 years of heavy industrial activity and pave the way for the creation of the new community.

Innovative funding methods are being used to finance the planned new neighbourhood. The showpiece £75m development, which will provide much-needed affordable as well as open market homes for the city, has been brought forward by the Tirion Group, a not-for-profit enterprise.

The Group aims to revitalise the long-disused Whiteheads site by acquiring and cleaning up the land using Welsh Government loan finance, securing planning permission and then developing the site in partnership with a private house builder.

The project will turn wasteland into a thriving community in which 50% of the 500 homes will be available at affordable rents. The scheme will also include the provision of a new primary school for the area.

On a visit to the site on 23 February Economy Minister Edwina Hart said:

“This project is an important element in the regeneration of Newport, bringing significant investment into the area as well as providing much needed high-quality housing that caters for households across a wide range of income groups. The development also has the potential to deliver hundreds of jobs and I am very encouraged to see work moving ahead.”
