What benefits could leasing deliver to a procurement strategy in today’s financial climate?

Singers Healthcare Finance has been providing leasing services to the NHS since Operating Leasing was introduced in 1996. They have funded many types of medical and non-medical assets for NHS Trusts across the country. They currently have live leasing agreements with over 70% of NHS Trusts.

Singers will use this experience to address how and when equipment leasing can be a viable procurement option for today's financially challenged NHS.

Finding ways to procure new and replacement equipment is more demanding than ever before. Maintaining and potentially improving on the expected performance and service delivery of today's modern NHS hospital requires management of many factors. Equipment is just one such factor, but it is critically important in the delivery of efficient and effective patient care.

Poor or ageing equipment can very quickly have a damaging impact on a hospital's performance and meeting the £20bn efficiency savings target has become of paramount importance to today's hospitals. Singers wants to demonstrate how leasing equipment can make a contribution towards achieving this.

1600 How procurement supports frontline
delivery of patient care
Andrew Foster
Chief Executive, Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust

Over the next few years the NHS faces no greater challenge than the economic one. We need to achieve efficiency savings of up to 25%, while demand is actually growing, all without reducing quality or increasing waiting times. This is not merely a tall order but something that no modern health system has achieved before. So the main way that procurement can support patient care is by achieving the best possible value for money savings and stretching the NHS pound as far as it can go. At Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust we have achieved savings of about £3m over the last four years, which is a huge contribution.

Procurement plays two other vital roles. Firstly, it manages the supply chain to ensure that we have reliability of supply and quality of product. Secondly, it helps us to be a good corporate citizen through collaboration with other public sector and NHS partners. This presentation will cover the three main themes of value for money, supply chain management and being a good corporate citizen.
