Base Repair Organisation (ABRO)[top]
ABRO is an engineering service, repair and re-manufacturing
organisation offering a worldwide capability to defence,
emergency service and other governmental and non-governmental
organisations.

Training & Recruitment Agency (ATRA)[top]
Responsible for providing recruitment and training services
for the British Army.
The Agency Headquarters is based at Upavon, close to many
of the training units. Recruiting is carried out from 123
sites in towns and cities throughout the country and individual
training is conducted at some 40 schools.
With
a staff of about 12,000, the Agency is responsible for Ministry
of Defence land, buildings and field assets valued at more
than one and a quarter billion pounds. The annual budget
is between £600m and £700m from which ATRA is
required to enlist about 15,000 recruits and to train a
total of about 100,000 officers and soldiers. ATRA conduct
almost 1,500 different types of courses, with over 6,000
actual courses run each year. There are an average of 12,000
officers and soldiers under training at any time.

Central Data Management Authority (CDMA)[top]
The Central Data Management Authority is a tri-service/civil
service organisation responsible for ensuring data is defined
consistently across the MoD to enable
IS interoperability.

Computer
Emergency Response Team (MODCERT)[top]
Responsible for coordinating the MoD's response to
computer security incidents.
The United Kingdom Ministry of Defence is a member organisation
of both the international Federation of Incident Response
Security Teams (FIRST) and the Trusted Introducer (TI) scheme,
which aim to provide a mechanism for Computer Security Incident
information to be shared amongst communities of interest.
This
function is often colloquially known as a CERT (Computer
Emergency Response Team), and the MoD organisation is therefore
known as the MODCERT.
MODCERT
is a distributed organisation, consisting of a central Co-ordination
Centre (the Joint Security Co-ordination Centre or JSyCC),
and a number of Monitoring and Reporting Centres (MRCs),
Warning, Advice and Reporting Points (WARPs), and Incident
Response Teams (IRTs). MODCERT works closely with the UK
Government CERT (GCERT) at UNIRAS.

Defence Analytical Services Agency (DASA)[top]
Provides professional statistical and analytical services
to customers across the MoD.
The
Defence Analytical Services Agency (DASA) is part of the
UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) providing professional statistical
and analytical services to customers across MoD providing,
as it says in its motto, "information with insight".
The Agency has around 160 staff spread over five sites in
the southern half of the country - Bath, Bristol, Gloucester,
Portsmouth, Upavon (near Swindon), and on two sites in London.
This is because our staff work alongside their major customers.
DASA
staff are also part of the Government Statistical Service
(GSS), which is the corporate professional grouping to which
they all belong. DASA is working towards releasing all its
key publications under the National Statistics programme.

Responsible for a range of services across all aspects
of MoD aviation repair support.
DARA
was formed in April 1999 to offer a range of services across
all aspects of repair support, in essence providing a "one-stop

Provides joint logistic support to the UK's Armed Forces.
The DLO is the single largest organisation in the MoD, with
an annual spend of over £6 billion and
£20 billion worth of assets spread across some 80
major UK sites. It employs 33,000 staff - many of whom work

individual pieces of equipment, although others work in

Medical Training Organisation (DMTO)[top]
DMTO is responsible for the individual medical services
training of personnel from the Royal Navy, Army and Royal

Procurement Agency (DPA)[top]
Responsible for the procurement of equipment for the
Armed Forces.
Equipping
the Armed Forces is the Defence Procurement Agency (DPA)'s
central mission. It procures new equipment for the Armed
Forces and provides other procurement-related services to
its customers. Based at Abbey Wood in north Bristol, the
DPA was launched on 1 April 1999 as an Executive Agency
of the Ministry of Defence, replacing the MoD Procurement
Executive.
The
DPA's objectives are to buy weapons systems and platforms
and manage major upgrades deliver projects within defined
performance, time and cost bands; provide certain procurement-related
services, guidance and standards; and participate in the
UK's military nuclear programmes.
With
an annual budget of £6 billion, the DPA is the single
biggest purchaser of manufactured goods in the UK. At any
one time, its 4,300 staff are managing more than 13,000
contracts, ranging from the purchase of submarines to small
parts for a field radio.

Scientific Advisory Council (DSAC)[top]
Provides independent advice to the Secretary of State
for Defence on matters of concern to the Ministry of Defence
in the fields of science, engineering and technology. DSAC
is a Non-Departmental Public Body (NDPB) i.e. a body which
has a role in the process of national government but is
not a government department or part of one, and which accordingly
operates to a greater or lesser extent at arm's length from
