Army Base Repair Organisation (ABRO)[top]
ABRO is an engineering service, repair and re-manufacturing organisation offering a worldwide capability to defence, emergency service and other governmental and non-governmental organisations.

ABRO capabilities range from small arms to battle tanks, from motorcycles to commercial fleet management, and binoculars to thermal imaging equipment. This ensures ABRO can uniquely offer customers a comprehensive one-point service, repair and re-manufacturing solution.

A highly flexible and strategically sited workforce of 2,500 ensures that ABRO is capable of meeting large-scale repair and overhaul requirements. An unusually wide range of skills and expertise together with detailed knowledge allows ABRO to compete effectively in a wide range of equipment types and technologies, across world markets.

Army Personnel Centre (APC)[top]
Mans the Army, manages the career of Army personnel, provides Army pay, personnel and pensions administration.

Army Training & Recruitment Agency (ATRA)[top]
Responsible for providing recruitment and training services for the British Army.
The Agency Headquarters is based at Upavon, close to many of the training units. Recruiting is carried out from 123 sites in towns and cities throughout the country and individual training is conducted at some 40 schools.

With a staff of about 12,000, the Agency is responsible for Ministry of Defence land, buildings and field assets valued at more than one and a quarter billion pounds. The annual budget is between £600m and £700m from which ATRA is required to enlist about 15,000 recruits and to train a total of about 100,000 officers and soldiers. ATRA conduct almost 1,500 different types of courses, with over 6,000 actual courses run each year. There are an average of 12,000 officers and soldiers under training at any time.

Central Data Management Authority (CDMA)[top]
The Central Data Management Authority is a tri-service/civil service organisation responsible for ensuring data is defined consistently across the MoD to enable
IS interoperability.

The CDMA mission is to enable information interoperability by ensuring that information has common meaning wherever it is used within MoD. Its vision is to enable seamless information interoperability within MoD and between MoD, its Allies and industry.

Computer Emergency Response Team (MODCERT)[top]
Responsible for coordinating the MoD's response to computer security incidents.
The United Kingdom Ministry of Defence is a member organisation of both the international Federation of Incident Response Security Teams (FIRST) and the Trusted Introducer (TI) scheme, which aim to provide a mechanism for Computer Security Incident information to be shared amongst communities of interest.

This function is often colloquially known as a CERT (Computer Emergency Response Team), and the MoD organisation is therefore known as the MODCERT.

MODCERT is a distributed organisation, consisting of a central Co-ordination Centre (the Joint Security Co-ordination Centre or JSyCC), and a number of Monitoring and Reporting Centres (MRCs), Warning, Advice and Reporting Points (WARPs), and Incident Response Teams (IRTs). MODCERT works closely with the UK Government CERT (GCERT) at UNIRAS.

Defence Analytical Services Agency (DASA)[top]
Provides professional statistical and analytical services to customers across the MoD.

The Defence Analytical Services Agency (DASA) is part of the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) providing professional statistical and analytical services to customers across MoD providing, as it says in its motto, "information with insight". The Agency has around 160 staff spread over five sites in the southern half of the country - Bath, Bristol, Gloucester, Portsmouth, Upavon (near Swindon), and on two sites in London. This is because our staff work alongside their major customers.

DASA staff are also part of the Government Statistical Service (GSS), which is the corporate professional grouping to which they all belong. DASA is working towards releasing all its key publications under the National Statistics programme. Defence Aviation Repair Agency (DARA)[top]
Responsible for a range of services across all aspects of MoD aviation repair support.

DARA was formed in April 1999 to offer a range of services across all aspects of repair support, in essence providing a "one-stop shop" for maintenance, repair and overhaul. The Agency became a Trading Fund on 1 April 2001 - in the shortest timescale possible. Today DARA is leaner and fitter, firmly focused on its customers and determined to provide a flexible, responsive and efficient service.

Defence Bills Agency[top]
Primarily responsible for paying bills submitted to the Ministry of Defence by defence contractors. Its aim is to pay 100% of correctly presented bills within
11 calendar days of receipt. This represents part of the MoD's 30-day payment target which is in accordance with the Late Payment of Commercial Debt (Interest)

Defence Estates (DE)[top]
DE manages and maintains the MoD's estates in the UK and abroad. Through the Defence Estates the MoD owns approximately 1% of the UK landmass, making MoD the UK's largest landowner. Defence Logistics Organisation (DLO)[top]
Provides joint logistic support to the UK's Armed Forces. The DLO is the single largest organisation in the MoD, with an annual spend of over £6 billion and
£20 billion worth of assets spread across some 80 major UK sites. It employs 33,000 staff - many of whom work in its 68 Integrated Project Teams delivering support on individual pieces of equipment, although others work in a range of units and agencies responsible for the supply of vital support services such as communications, storage, transport, fuel, munitions and food.

The DLO consists primarily of five major Business Units - each providing specialist logistics for Air, Sea, Land, Communications and Defence Logistic Support (e.g fuel, warehousing, food).

Defence Medical Training Organisation (DMTO)[top]
DMTO is responsible for the individual medical services training of personnel from the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force, including Reserves. This training is carried out through a mixed programme of internal courses - at the Royal Defence Medical College in Gosport and at the Defence Medical Services Training Centre in Aldershot - and in external academic and clinical institutions.

Defence Procurement Agency (DPA)[top]
Responsible for the procurement of equipment for the Armed Forces.

Equipping the Armed Forces is the Defence Procurement Agency (DPA)'s central mission. It procures new equipment for the Armed Forces and provides other procurement-related services to its customers. Based at Abbey Wood in north Bristol, the DPA was launched on 1 April 1999 as an Executive Agency of the Ministry of Defence, replacing the MoD Procurement Executive.

The DPA's objectives are to buy weapons systems and platforms and manage major upgrades deliver projects within defined performance, time and cost bands; provide certain procurement-related services, guidance and standards; and participate in the UK's military nuclear programmes.

With an annual budget of £6 billion, the DPA is the single biggest purchaser of manufactured goods in the UK. At any one time, its 4,300 staff are managing more than 13,000 contracts, ranging from the purchase of submarines to small parts for a field radio.

Defence Scientific Advisory Council (DSAC)[top]
Provides independent advice to the Secretary of State for Defence on matters of concern to the Ministry of Defence in the fields of science, engineering and technology. DSAC is a Non-Departmental Public Body (NDPB) i.e. a body which has a role in the process of national government but is not a government department or part of one, and which accordingly operates to a greater or lesser extent at arm's length from Ministers. It is an Advisory NDPB in that it advises Ministers and does not employ staff or incur expenditure on its own account.

DSAC is established to provide independent advice to the Secretary of State for Defence on matters of concern to the Ministry of Defence in the fields of science, engineering & technology.

Defence Scientific and Technical Laboratory (Dstl)[top]
Provides specialist scientific and technical support to the MoD.

The name Dstl may be new, but the key scientific research conducted at eminent locations such as Farnborough, Porton Down and Malvern has been part of Britain's national heritage for decades.

With a tradition of outstanding research and analysis that has been the beating heart of the UK defence system for over a century, the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) is an integral part of the Ministry of Defence as its trusted adviser on defence-related science and technology.

Dstl has a 3,000 strong workforce of dedicated world-class professionals. It comprises all the defence laboratories and capabilities retained within government from Dstl's forerunner organisation, the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency (DERA).

Defence Secondary Care Agency (DSCA)[top]
The key task of the DSCA is to provide Britain's front-line Armed Forces, wherever they are in action, with fully trained service doctors, nurses and other medical staff. To achieve this, the Agency provides a peacetime structure within which clinicians and other medical personnel can develop their professional and military skills by treating a full range of patients.
